Case Study on Jamaican GEF SGP Grantee and 2014 Equator Prize Winner - Jeffrey Town Farmers Association

January 5, 2019

The Jeffrey Town Farmers Association (JTFA) is one of 35 community initiatives that were awarded the Equator Prize in 2014. The JTFA received the award for its outstanding contribution to environmental conservation, poverty reduction and climate action. The Jamaican NGO was selected for this honour from 1,234 nominations submitted by communities in 121 countries across the world. This case study highlights the best practices and methodologies employed by the JFTA which make them a model of sustainable development at the community level.Community incomes have improved through a range of alternative livelihoods activities that include livestock rearing, fruit cultivation, and agro-forestry. Pineapple plants
have been used to stabilize hillsides that were previously susceptible to landslides, which caused environmental and economic damage to local communities. Demonstration plots are used for farmer training activities, particularly, around drought-resistant crops. Solar street lights have been introduced in four communities and a new healthfacility was built to meet local medical needs
