Facing the Challenges of Forced Displacement in Central America and Mexico

October 25, 2021

Internal and cross-border forced displacement has grown significantly during the last five years in Central America and Mexico. The confluence of economic, political, social and environmental factors has led to a growing situation of chronic violence and insecurity, which has forced increasing numbers of internally displaced persons, refugees and asylum seekers to leave their homes.

Through this "Toolkit", UNDP and UNHCR seek to support the authorities in planning local development through the inclusion of the human mobility and displacement approach. The instrument includes four pillars: (i) incorporating forced displacement into local development planning; (ii) protection and access to essential services; (iii) the rule of law and electronic governance, and (iv) socioeconomic integration and social cohesion.l.
