Opportunities for Peaceful Coexistence and Citizen Security

 

Challenge: Although 8% of the world population lives in Latin America and the Caribbean, 33% of homicides worldwide take place in the region, which includes 17 of the 20 countries with the highest number of homicides.

UNDP’s approach to citizen and community security attempts to tackle all of the potential causes of crime and violence. This multifaceted approach helps countries to integrate violence prevention and crime control measures; targeting a broad range of issues, such as lack of social cohesion, impunity, drug trafficking, the proliferation of illegal firearms, human trafficking, and rights abuse of migrants, violence against youth and women.

At UNDP we further support counterpart in the development and application of methodologies of dialogue processes. The practical guide to “Democratic Dialogue” helps to examine and address strategic guidelines to reinforce to reduce conflict and improve peaceful coexistence.

In the following ways:

1. Improving the availability and quality of information and statistics in matters of citizen security.

2. Promoting justice and human rights, as well as the empowerment of vulnerable groups.

3. Development of innovative solutions and online platforms to prevent violence and promote citizen security.

4. Supporting the development of public policy on citizen security and strategic planning for the transformational institutions of security and justice sector including a gender perspective.

5. Supporting the design, implementation, and monitoring initiatives on citizen security and justice at the local and community levels.

6. Supporting and fostering capacities to engage in processes of dialogue, mediation, and conflict resolution as tools for innovation and transformation of social conflict, and rebuilding trust.

7. Improving Security Sector Reforms.
