- After the exceptionally busy time in New York, I left for visits to three Latin American countries, beginning with Panama where UNDP has a very active Country Office, and also its service hub for the region. The photos below show three aspects of our work which I saw on my two day visit: 1. Support for the restoration of the old city of Panama City which was built in 1673. It is a major cultural and heritage asset, and is attracting visitors from around the world. 2. Support for conservation of the forests which are the catchment for water for the Panama canal locks. Small farmers are getting secure land title, improving productivity, and supporting protection of the ecosystem. A small micro hydro plant is going in to provide electricity to the school in the remote village which I visited, and to power a cool store for farm produce. 3. Working to support dialogue between indigenous people and government. I had a very good meeting with traditional leaders on their hopes and aspirations from these processes. I also met the President and Vice-President; both have a strong commitment to the UNDP partnership. UNDP in Latin America and the Caribbean Yesterday AT 06:05 PM
