Guidance Note: Application of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework in Development Projects

July 6, 2017

In 2015, UNDP undertook an analysis on the impact on livelihoods of the Environment and Energy Portfolio in Latin America and the Caribbean. This analysis inspired the present Guidance Note for the Application of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework in Development Projects. The present guidance note serves as a tool for UNDP programming, and particularly the development and monitoring of environmental projects. This piece fits in with other work being undertaken in the Natural Capital Group of UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support and the UNDP Global Environmental Finance unit.

The guide is divided into three main sections, covering the following areas: Section 1 introduces Sustainable Livelihoods (SL) and describes common methods and approaches used by different development agencies in order to assess livelihoods and their sustainability within different social groups; Section 2 discusses the Sustainable Livelihoods capitals, the different resource categories needed to operationalize the SLF described in Section 1;  and Section 3 explains the tool and offers suggestions on how to carry out an analysis of the capitals in existing projects which could also be leveraged in the development of new initiatives.
